Ptosis or Drooping of Eyelids refers to the drooping of an eyelid and it affects only the upper eyelid of one or both eyes. The droop may become barely noticeable, or the lid can descend over the entire pupil. Ptosis can occur in both children and adults, but happens most often due to aging.
Causes of Ptosis
Ptosis can be present at birth or developed due to aging, injury or an after effect of cataract or other eye surgery. Psotis present at birth is known as Congenital Ptosis and Ptosis which later happens due to certain factors is known as Acquired Ptosis. Acquired Ptosis are characterised on the basis of the history such as :
- Neurogenic Ptosis : It is caused by a partial or complete paralysis of the nerve innervating the levator muscle.
- Myogenic Ptosis : It is caused by facial weakness.
- Traumatic Ptosis : It is mostly caused by trauma to the eyelid
- Mechanical Ptosis : In this type the upper eyelid may be prevented from opening completely because of an an eyelid tumour.
- Dermatochalasis Ptosis : This form of acquired Ptosis is the presence of excessive and redundant eyelid skin and is almost always progressive with ageing. Surgical correction may be indicated for visual or cosmetic reasons.
Treatment for Ptosis or Drooping Eyelids
Reconstructive Surgery for Ptosis or Drooping Eyelids is the only option to cure Ptosis. The surgery is a form of Eye Surgery which is designed to tighten the elevator muscle by shortening it to allow the muscle to sufficiently elevate the eyelid. The eyelid is often carefully compared to the opposite eye in terms of lid height. In some cases where the elevator is exceptionally weak the eyelid is attached to the brow muscles with a levator sting allowing the forehead to elevate the lid.
Ptosis Surgery is usually completed under general anaesthesia in infants and young children and under local anaesthesia with sedation in adults. The operation is mostly done in a day as an outpatient surgery.
